SANDOKAN and Yañez are in a room at the fort listening carefully to a pirate deciphering signs written on a palm leaf. These signs will tell them how to get to the land of Sandokan’s ancestors. Just then, Sambigliong comes in. Sambigliong has discovered that Nasumbata is hiding among the Dayakos. Nasumbata is a spy of the Rajah of Lake Kin-Bally, who with much bloodshed, seized the throne rightfully belonging to SANDOKAN’s parents. In spite of Yañez’s fears that this may be a trap set by the enemy, SANDOKAN decides to leave immediately for Borneo in search of Nasumbata. Heedless of Yañez’s warnings, SANDOKAN orders his men to make two paraos ready to leave for Borneo. They reach the Bay of Malludu, where they take up positions for an attack on the “Kotta” (a fortified Dayako village with a great palisade and virtually impregnable with the great ditches full of thorns and poisoned arrows surrounding it), where the traitor Nasumbata is in hiding. They decide to anchor their craft under the branches of some enormous tress growing by the side of a stream and wait until nightfall to launch a surprise attack. SANDOKAN and one of his men leave the boat to explore the area, but they run into two Dayakos, who threaten them with their poisoned arrows. They manage to capture one of the Dayakos, but the other escapes. Fearful that the other may alert the village, they return to the paraos and decide to attack at once. After the battle, SANDOKAN manages to get the information he needs to reach the land of his ancestors out of the injured Nasumbata, who then dies.
